Festival of Music and Dance in Bangkok was founded in 1999. According to tradition, the event is held under the patronage of the princesses of the Royal House of Thailand. From the Festival’s very beginning its organizers set the goal to turn the Festival into a world-class event, to approve Bangkok as a center of the performing arts on the cultural map of the world, to provide an opportunity for Thai youth and cultural community to get acquainted with the world's best examples of the art. All this became quite possible. Thai Royal family continues to give full support to the Festival. This year the Festival opens on September 13, 2013 and continues for more than five weeks. It is attended by thousands of artists. Despite the fact that the realization of the festival of such a scale is associated with huge expenses, the organizers are ready for these expenses, because the Festival enhances the prestige of Thailand in the eyes of the world community and helps to increase the number of tourists. And this is important for the country, where tourism revenues are more than 10% of the total income. The Festival has also succeeded in renewing the interest of the youth in the classical arts - the number of ballet schools has gone up to over 20 from just three. And after the Festival introduced the first opera in the year 2000, today Bangkok can boast of its own two opera companies. Each year the festival gathers the elite of not only traditional art forms such as opera, ballet, symphonic music, jazz, modern dance, but also such exotic for Thailand arts as the ballet on ice and the Latin dances.

On September 17, 2013 the Moscow Musical Theater "Helikon-Opera" under Dmitry Bertman will present "Les Contes d’Hoffmann" by J. Offenbach at the Thai Cultural Center. On September 18, symphony orchestra of the theater will play Tchaikovsky’s Symphony № 3, "Pictures from the Exhibition" by M. Mussorgsky (edited by Maurice Ravel) and "Polovets’ Dances" from the Borodin's opera "Prince Igor."
