"Tosca" in Dmitry Bertman's production on stage of Latvian National Opera
On the 7th of December the premiere of renewed "Tosca" by G. Puccini performance in Artistic Director of "Helikon-opera" Dmitry Bertman's production will take place on stage of Latvian National Opera.
Dmitry Bertman staged "Tosca" in Riga in 2004. Inessa Linaburgite, Marina Tropina and Kristīne Opolais sang Tosca in that perfromance. Alexander Antonenko played as Cavaradossi, Samson Iziumov, who is engaged in the part this time either, as Scarpia. In his performance Dmitry Bertman both moves the time frame and changes plot, not going against music and text. In 2012 edition the main thing for stage director is his work with new artists, performers of the main parts: Liene Kinča (Tosca), Andris Ludvigs (Cavaradossi), Jānis Apeinis (Scarpia). Svetlana Sozdateleva (Tosca), George Oniani (Cavaradossi), Samson Iziumov, Roman Polisadov, Viesturs Vītols, Krišjānis Norvelis, Armands Siliņš, Nauris Puntulis, Guntars Ruņģis, Kārlis Saržants, Imants Erdmans, Rihards Mačanovskis, Imants Erdmans are also engaged in the perfromance. Conductor and musical director Modestas Pitrenas, Set Designer - Andris Freibergs, Costume Designer - Kristīne Pasternaka, Video Artist - Katrīna Neiburga, Lighting Designer - Kevin Wyn-Jones.
Dmitry Bertman about the performance: "The story of Tosca hasn't changed, that's why the epoch in the conventional sense is not shown. The action takes place in the church, and the church is the same at all times. Jeans and T-shirts, military uniforms are not used, although a fascist uniform is used frequently in "Tosca" productions all over the world. I have not followed the path of modernity and new costumes. I have worked on this for twenty years: I had "Carmen" in the disposal dump with addicts ... But this is over. The innovation is in the different cover of the classic story. My "Tosca" is a chamber view of this great operatic tragedy. But artists are the main in the production, and I work with them primarily".
