II NANO-OPERA competition starts in Moscow
From May 17 to May 30, 2015 "Helikon-Opera" together with the Department of Culture of Moscow, the Union of theatrical figures of the Russian Federation and the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre holds second international competition for young opera directors "NANO-OPERA".
From 17 to 23 May the competition will be held in the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, and from 24 to 30 May 2015 in Helikon-Opera theatre in Moscow.
Competition for young opera director "NANO-OPERA" is unique in the world!
"NANO-OPERA" is intended to give an opportunity to young opera directors to express themselves working with professional artists. The main objectives of "NANO-OPERA" is to breathe new life into traditional Russian opera with the efforts of directors of the younger generation and find ways to the organic integration of modern technologies in the opera.
The competition program will include brief scenes from operas of the theatre repertoire, and time for staging would be strictly limited, corresponding to the rhythm of work of the modern director.
The first international "NANO-OPERA" competition took place in May 2013. All the winners, young directors from Russia and abroad, have received interesting proposals on cooperation with the largest theaters in Russia and Europe. The winner of the Grand Prix Dmitry Belyanushkin has produced the show for children "Story of Kai and Gerda" at the Bolshoi Theater of Russia this season, Philippe Razenkov became the Chief Director of the Izhevsk State Opera and Ballet, Alexei Frandetti actively cooperates with "Gogol center" in Moscow, Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet and Riga Opera, George Dmitriyev is working on opera stage in Russia and Uzbekistan, for example, he performed Rasputin in the same name performance by Jay Reese in Helikon-opera.
The eminent international jury of “NANO-OPERA” includes chief executives of the leading opera houses of Europe and Russia.

This year, the tender had received more than 50 applications. In the first qualifying round 10 directors became the participants of the contest: Sergey Morozov (Russia), Andreas Rosar (Switzerland, Biel), Andrey Tsvetkov-Tolbin (Russia, Moscow), George Dmitriyev (Uzbekistan, Tashkent), Daria Potaturko (Belarus, Minsk), Ekaterina Vasilyova (Moscow, Russia), Pavel Sorokin (Russia, Rostov-on-Don), Sergei Novikov (Russia), Philipp Razenkov (Russia, Izhevsk), Julia Zhuravkova (Kiev, Ukraine).
On May 24, 2015 all participants, who have passed Ist Round, are coming from Krasnoyarsk to Moscow after the end of the creative laboratory, and on May 25 the draw of the competition will be held in Helikon-Opera.
II and III of the tours will take place on 26, 27 and 28 May in the presence of the jury and the audience in Helikon-Opera, beginning at 19:00.
In the II round each participant produce one aria and one duet with the soloists of Helikon-Opera, in the III round finalists will produce a massive stage with soloists and chorus of the theater. Both tours are accompanied with the piano. A participant has 15 minutes for the production of each number. During this time, he has to held a rehearsal with the actors and show the result to the audience.
The following prizes are given: the Grand Prix, I, II and III prize. The winners get the right of producing the show on the historical stage of Helikon-Opera, prizes and diplomas. In addition, Media Jury will awards its prizes, and People's Choice Award will be given to the most charming participant of the competition as the result of the survey of spectators during both rounds.
The award ceremony (beginning at 17.00) and the final gala-concert (beginning at 19.00) with soloists, chorus and orchestra of the theater will be held on May 29, 2015 on stage of Helikon-Opera in Novy Arbat.
