NANO-opera. Press-conference and the results of casting of lots

On the 25th of March a press-conference, devoted to the Ist International contest of young stage directors, took place in Moscow musical theatre "Helikon-opera" under Dmitry Bertman.

The Artistic Director of “Helikon-opera” and co-chairman of International jury of the contest, The People’s Artist of Russia, professor, the Head of the Faculty of Musical Theatre in GITIS Dmitry Bertman told the journalists about the conditions and the procedure of the contest, he also presented the participants of the contest and the members of the International jury.

The Ist International contest of young directors “NANO-opera” (biennale) will take place on stage of “Helikon-opera” from the 25^th to 29^th of March. The organizers of the contest are “Helikon-opera”, The Department of Culture of Moscow, The Union of Theatrical Workers of Russia and Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre.

The contest of opera directors is held for the 1^st time in Russia. The young directors, representatives of different theatrical schools, will have to work in real contemporary conditions. The technological scenography will be minimalistic, so that the contestants could concentrate on the most important, the work with the actor.

The skills of the participants will be judged by the International jury, which consists of the leading stage dictors from Russia, Europe, America. The Chairmen of the jury are the Head of the Department of Culture of Moscow Sergey Kapkov and teh Artistic Director of “Helikon-opera” Dmitry Bertman. The media jury also takes part in the work of the contest.

More than 30 applications to the contest were handed, ten were accepted by the professional jury.

From the 25^th to the 28^th of February Krasnoyarsk Theatre of Opera and Ballet accepted “the ten”. The creative training laboratory and a gala-concert were held.

On the 26^th and the 27^th of March the ten “lucky ones”, which were accepted according their explications at the 1^st  round, will stage arias and duets with ”Helikon-opera” artists. The mass scenes will be shown on the 28^th of March at the 3rd round. The repertoire performances of “Helikon-opera” are the musical basis for the contest. The production process will be shown to the public, which will be able to see “the holy of holies” - the kitchen of an opera director, and to watch the birth of an opera masterpiece.

All shows began at 17.00.

The ceremony of awards will be held on the 29^th of March in Gogol Centre  at 12.00. The fund of the contest includes four prizes. The Grand Prix is 100 000 roubles and the right to direct a performance on the historical stage of “Helikon-opera”. The 1^st, 2^nd and the 3^rd prizes are the 70, 50 and 30 thousand roubles accordingly. The prizes of media jury and the viewer’s sympathy prize will be handed too.

The same evening a gala-concert, which will include the best scenes, shown during three days of the contest, will be held at 19.00 at “Helikon-opera” stage in New Arbat.

After a welcome speech of Dmitry Bertman the open casting of lots was held. The participants got their sequence numbers for the nearest two days. The young directors got on stage, presented themselves and  took out the hidden oranges with the numbers from the black box. The destiny distributed the participants of the contest in the following way:
