"Carmen" in "Helikon-Opera". Introductions
The summer series of the legendary performance of "Helikon-Opera" "Carmen" by Georges Bizet's opera was marked by the introduction of new soloists. The performance was staged by Dmitry Bertman, the artistic director of "Helikon-opera", in 1996 and caused a major stir in the audience and critics. Some people absolutely didn't not accept treatment the director proposed. Others enthusiastically welcomed Bertman's new production, which followed the music dramaturgy of the unfading operatic masterpiece step by step.
In 1996 the performance was awarded with the Russian National Theatre Award "The Golden Mask" in two categories: "Best director working in musical theater" and "Best Actress". Time puts everything in its place. Helikon's "Carmen" has become a classic. Through all these years that have passed since the premiere, "Carmen" has been one of the most popular performances in the playbill of "Helikon-Opera", which has the constant demand from the public. The show has travelled the world, it was shown in all the leading opera houses and festivals in France and Spain. "Carmen" was performed in the UK, Israel, Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Estonia and Hungary and received warm applause everywhere.
In June 2012 series of "Carmen" the part of Jose was given by the young singer Ali Magomedov, who joined the troupe at the start of this season, and attracted the attention by his performance of Claudio in "Das Liebesverbot", the comic opera by R. Wagner, the premiere of this season.
Micaela's part was for the first time sang by the former student of Dmitry Bertman, RATA (GITIS) graduate, Lydia Svetozarova, which repeatedly acted in Helikon's performances this season. Escamillo was performed by Konstantin Brzhinsky, who joined "Helikon-opera" at the start of this season and has already performed the roles of Griaznoy (The Tsar's Bride), Ford (Falstaff), Falk (Die Fledermaus) and Eugene Onegin at the same name opera.
Small, but bright parts of Dankayro and Remendado were performed by Alexei Isaev and Andrey Palamarchuk.
