Helikon-Opera tour to Hungary



From the 18th till 23rd of June Helikon-Opera had been visiting Bartok+ Festival in Miskolc (Hungary). (Согласование времен)This was the third visit of the theatre to Miskolc: in 2005 the performance “Norma” by V. Bellini, produced by Dmitry Bertman in Spain, took place in Miskolc on Bartok+Belcanto. In 2006 Helikon-Opera showed “Siberia” by U. Giordano on “Bartok+Verismo. As the festival was devoted to Slavonic theme, two performances by Russian composers: “Boris Godunov” by M. P. Moussorsky and “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” by D. D. Shostakovich were presented to the audience. The tour was very successful: all tickets were sold out for both performances.

The public warmly received artists of the theatre, who brilliantly performed their roles. Alexey Tikhomirov (Boris Godunov),  Ilya Ilin (Feodor), Marina Kalinina (Xenia), the Honoured Artist of Russia Vadim Zaplechny (Prince Shujsky), Peter Morozov (Andrey Schelkalov), Stanislav Shvets (Pimen), Vasily Efimov (The Pretender-Grigory), the Honoured Artist of Russia Ksenia Vyaznikova (Marina Mniszek), the Honoured Artist of Russia Andrey Vylegzhanin (Rangoni), Maria Maskhulia (Shinkarka), Dmitry Ovchinnikov (Varlaam), Vladimir Bolotin (Missail), Dmitry Kalin (Mitiukha), Natalia Arkhipova, Olga Zhilina, Elizaveta Serysheva (Women), the choir and the orchestra of the theatre took part in “Boris Godunov”.

The roles in “Lady Macbeth…” were performed by Svetlana Sozdateleva (Katerina Lvovna Izmailova), the Honoured Artist of Russia Sergey Toptygin (Boris Timofeevich Izmailov), Dmitry Ponomarev (Zinoviy Borisovich Izmailov), the Honoured Artist of Russia Vadim Zaplechny (Sergey), the Honoured Artist of Russia Andrey Vylegzhanin (Officer),   Marina Kalinina (Aksinia), Vladimir Bolotin (Shabby Peasant), the Honoured Artist of Russia Ksenia Vyaznikova (Sonetka), Alexey TIkhomirov (Priest), Dmitry Ovchinnikov (Millhand), Andrey Orekhov (Yard-keeper), Eugene Ilin (Sales man), Andrey Palamarchuk (Teacher, 2nd worker). Maestro Vladimir Ponkin conducted both performances.


Artistic Director of Bartok+ famous singer Eva Marton and Director of the Festival Tomas Bator were delighted with the performances and expressed their feelings to the artists in a touching manner.


The performance “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” coincided with Russia – Holland football match, so in the intervals between scenes Helikon staff had attentively been watching the play on the TV screen. Apparently their enthusiastic mood was transferred to the spectators who didn’t want to let them leave the stage and organized the grandiose ovation at the end of the performance. The successful ending of the tour grew into stormy rejoicing of Helikon staff in the streets of Miskolc in occasion of the victory of our team.

Once again Helikon had conquered Miskolc, and the plan of tour to Hungary in 2009 is being discussed.
