THE “NANO-OPERA” COMPETITION WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE “HELIKON-OPERA” FOR THE FOURTH TIME
“Helikon-opera” announces the start of accepting the applications for participation in the unique competition of young opera directors “NANO-OPERA”, will take place this spring (2019) for the fourth time in the framework of the Year of Theatre.
The competition is organized by musical theater “Helikon-opera” in cooperation with Department of Culture of Moscow.
Traditionally, in the NANO-OPERA competition there are 4 rounds. The 1st one – is the selective round. The perspective members produce the explication of one opera scene (any opera scene) of the world classic opera repertoire; it must be 2 pages of typed text made preferably in two languages – Russian and English. With the explication, contestants should send the filled in application form with the photo. This form, sighed by a contestant, will become a certificate of consent with all the conditions.
During the competition, the participants-directors do not just present the concept and layout, but, we can say, "from the sheet" work with the actors, creating a fragment of the play in front of the audience." The program includes only short opera scenes, and presupposes strictly limited time to stage it. Within 10 minutes, the contestant in front of the audience and the jury must stage an aria and a duet, and we give 15 minutes to stage a mass scene.
Traditionally, the Jury of "Nano-Opera" includes the heads of the world's best theaters. Thus, the participants of the competition have a real opportunity to get engagements, as they say, directly from the “first hands”. Young directors are also evaluated by a media jury consisting of the country's leading music critics, who award competitive prizes.
The idea of the competition for young opera directors came to the Artistic Director of Helikon-Opera, People’s Artist of Russia Dmitry Bertman in 2013.
