The remarkable and unique collective - choir of Moscow music theatre "Helikon Opera" was created in 1991 of the graduates from the Gnessin’s Musical academy and the Moscow conservatory. Comprising of only twenty person then, this high class choir has played an enormous role in a destiny of the theatre enabling the company to switch from chamber operas to scale performances.Today in the structure of the choir there are 40 singers in the age of from 20 up to 30, mostly graduates from the Musical Academy and the Conservatory. Extensive repertoire of the choir includes opera and choral music written by Russian and foreign composers, which could be both performed with a help of a symphonic orchestra and а-capella. In the concert programs the choir of "Helikon-opera" performs secular and spiritual compositions of different centuries and musical directions, from baroque to modernity. Alongside with classical works of Alyabyev, Dargomyzhsky, Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov the choir performs Sviridov, Schedrin, Sidelnikov, Pergolesi, Vivaldi, Mozart, Odds, and Verdi.
The opera repertoire of the choir is extensive and includes more than 30 compositions. Among them "Eugene Onegin", "Undine", "Mazeppa" and "The Queen of Spades" by Tchaikovsky, "The Tsar’s Bride", "Mozart and Saglieri", "The Golden Cockerel" and "Kaschey The Immortal" by Rimsky-Korsakov, "Carmen" by Bizet, "Aida", "La Traviata", "Macbeth" by Verdi, "Les Contes d’Hoffmann" by Offenbach, Strauss’s "Die Fledermaus", "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" by Shostakovich, "Les Dialogues des Carmelites" by Poulenc, "Gershwin-Gala", etc.
The mobile, talented group quickly and masterly seizes a musical material of the highest complexity. Thus all the operas are performed in the language of the original: Russian, French, Italian, German and even Czech. Uniqueness of the actors of the choir, capable to perform bright episodic roles with jeweler’s accuracy and skill, is also in remarkable plastic shape – all the actors move excellently. Many great singers and conductors: Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Ponkin, Eugeny Brazhnik, Sergey Stadler, Richard Bradshow, Roberto Alania, Jose Kura – collaborated willingly with the choir of the theater.
