Ilya Ilin was born in Magnitogorsk in 1974 in the family of musicians. In 1993 he graduated from the Magnitogorsk State Conservatory (academy) named after M.I. Glinka with a degree in choral conducting. Then he continued his education at the Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow.

In January 1994, being a student of the Gnessin State Musical College, Ilya became a member of the team of the young Moscow theatre “Helikon-opera” and took part in the performances of the theater as a choir artist. In 1998, Ilya Ilin graduated from the Gnessin State Musical College. In December 1999 – he became the head of the opera troupe, while continuing to perform in the theatre’s plays.

Since 2000, Ilya Ilin is trying himself as a stge director – assisting, introducing new performers into the repertoire. The first work of Ilya as a stage director is the children's play “Fairy-Tale City”. He also played the role of the storyteller Ole Lukoye in it. Then the young director staged such bright, already loved by the young viewers and their parents, children's performances: “Opera fairy tale welcomes guests”, New Year's performances - “School of Snow Maidens”, “Winter night’s dream”. Ilya also directed the play “Mozart and Salieri. Requiem”, gala-performances “Kalinka-opera”, “Back in the USSR!”, “Cartoon-Opera”.

In November 2015, the Moscow Musical Theatre “Helikon-Opera” returned to its native renovated and reconstructed house at 19 Nikolskaya Street. In the historic Shakhovskaya Hall Ilya staged three one-act performances, highly regarded by critics as events of the capital's theatre and music life - “Maestro di Capella” by D. Chimarose, “The Seven Deadly Sins” by K. Weill and “The Telephone” by G. Menotti.

Ilya Ilin staged several performances in the Kaliningrad Regional Musical Theater, with which Helikon not only on friendly terms, but also collaborates, including Offenbach's “A Dinner Party with the Italians” and “Un mari à la porte”, Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta”. Ilya also directed the transfer of the play “Mozart and Salieri” to the Baltic scene from Moscow. For several years he has been the director-assistant of the foreign production projects of Dmitry Bertman.

In 2004, Ilya Ilin assumed the post of deputy artistic director - director of creative groups: soloists, choir and orchestra of the theatre. Since 2008, he has been fruitfully cooperating with the People's Artist of the USSR Yury Bashmet.

From 2012 to 2017 he studied at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), the workshop of Andrejs Žagars (correspondence department, department of directing and mastery of the actor of musical theater).

His work was awarded testimonial by the Head of the Moscow Department of Culture in 2007. In 2009, Ilya Ilin was awarded the honorary title of “Honored Worker of Culture”.

In 2019 he was awarded with the Moscow city prize in the art and literature field, in the "Musical art" nomination, for staging the performances: "Seven deadly sins" by K. Weil, "The telephone" by G. Menotti and "Die Zauberflote" by W. A. Mozart.
