Edwald Smirnov was born in Leningrad, graduated from the Vaganova Leningrad Choreographic School, the Choreography Department of the Rimsky-Korsakov Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory (training course of L. Lebedev). Smirnov is a winner of international competitions. He was the ballet actor of the Saint-Petersburg Conservatory Theatre from 1973 to 1976, premiere dancer and the ballet group teacher of the theatre from 1982 to 1989. Since 1989 he has been an associate professor of the Ballet Producing Department and a teacher of Choreographer’s Arts in the Saint-Petersburg Conservatory, a professor of the Vaganova Russian Ballet Academy. Smirnov works with the ballet superstars, choreographs musicals, operas, operettas, straight plays, films. He cooperated with G. Tovstonogov, I. Vladimirov, R. Viktyuk, A. Kaydanovsky, S. Ovcharov and many other people of culture. He often gives master classes for ballet and drama actors in various countries. Smirnov is also a choreographer of many programs of the figure skaters, who have been the champions of Europe, Olympic Games and world champions, among them there are A. Urmanov, E. Plyuschenko, M. Petrova, A. Tikhonov and the other famous sportsmen. Since 2009 Edwald Smirnov is the choreographer of Helikon-Opera performances. Together with Dmitry Bertman he has staged more than 30 opera performances and shows all over the world. Among choreographer's recent works are "Turandot" by Puccini and "Il trovatore" and "La traviata" by Verdi in the Helikon-Opera, "Alcina" by Hendel in Musik&Theater MUTH (Vienna, Austria), “Demon” by Rubinstein in Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), Opéra National de Bordeaux (France).
