One of the world's most popular operas of Dr. Faust, who sold his soul to the devil in order to achieve Marguerite’s love, received an unexpected incarnation in a production by Dmitry Bertman and Ene-Liis Semper. At the moment when Faust makes a deal with Mephistopheles and regains his youth, the world around him turned over, changing from one extreme to another, from the church to the cabaret. The main motive of the play is the problem of choice: to surrender to the temptation or to reject it. According to the director, the devil is always sad when people choose to temptation. Therefore Mephisto in the play is eternally sullen, disappointed by Faust’s errors.
