Second International competition for young opera directors
Organized and promoted by Helikon-Opera under Dmitry Bertman, Department for Culture of the city of Moscow, Theatre Union of Russia, Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre

STATUTE

1. Second International competition for young opera directors NANO-OPERA is supposed to be held once in two years (Biennale).

2. Competition gives an opportunity to young opera directors to prove themselves working with professional actors using new theater technologies. The main tasks of the NANO-OPERA competition – to enliven traditional Russian opera theater and to find new ways for organic integration of modern technologies into the opera.

3. In the program there are short opera scenes and a strictly limited time to stage them, adequate to the requirements of modern stage directing. Stage design for the competitive works should be made in the style of minimalism and limited to video projections.

4. Information about the competition will be published on the www.helikon.ru and www.nanoopera.ru not later than April 4th, 2014.

5. The age limit for the participants is 40 years old, regardless nationality, but with higher education? Confirmed by the Diploma.

6. In NANO-OPERA competition there are 3 rounds. In the 1st round (selection) members produce the explication of one opera scene (any opera scene) ; it must be 2 pages of typed text made preferably in two languages Russian and English. Explication should be sent to the nanoopera@gmail.com not later than February 1, 2015. The Jury decision will be published on the www.helikon.ru not later than April 1-st , 2015. Explications are not edited or returned back to the senders.

*With the explication, contestants should send the filled in application form. This form, sighed by contestant, will become a certificate of consent with all the conditions.

Those who win in the 1st round are sent to the Krasnoyarsk Opera and Ballet Theatre from May 17 until May 23, 2015, where the artistic workshops take place (Jury joins the contestants). This is a kind of preparation for the 2nd round of the Competition by staging the scenes from the repertory of the Krasnoyarsk Opera and its actors of the 15 min. duration. The repertory mentioned attached. All the costs referring to this trip are covered by NANO-OPERA.

7. The allotment of those passed through to the 2nd round, will be held on May 24, 2015 in Helikon-Opera Theater.

8. The 2nd and the 3d rounds will be held on the stage of Helikon-Opera in public. At the 2nd round the participants will work with the soloists of Helikon-Opera staging one opera aria and one duet, chosen from the list attached. At the 3d round the finalists of NANO-OPERA project will work with the soloists and the choir of Helikon-Opera making the mass scene. Both 2nd and 3d rounds are accompanied by the piano. The stage design is mostly made by video projections, prepared by the participants at home. Soloists, choir and directors are dressed in the uniform. Working languages of the contest are Russian and English.

9. International Jury of NANO-OPERA competition includes opera and drama directors, intendants of Russian and Foreign opera theaters. Co-chairmen of the Jury are supposed to be the Head of Moscow Department for Culture, the Minister of Moscow Government Sergey Kapkov and Artistic Director of Helikon-Opera Dmitry Bertman. The Jury’s decision is final.

10. The winners are awarded with the following prizes:

Grand Prix – 100000 rub and the option of staging an opera on the historical stage of Helikon-Opera

III prize – (to be announced)

Press Prize (to be awarded by the press jury)

Prize of the Audience Sympathy
