By the 200th anniversary since M. Lermontov's birth (1814 - 1841) Novaya Opera presents the program "Angel, Demon and others ...", which was prepared by the head of the Literature Department of the theater, music critic, pianist Michael Segelman. The program of the 25 works of 17-year-composers is a kind of Lermontov's image in vocal music of XIX - XX centuries, from the contemporaries of the poet Alexander Varlamov, Alexander Gurilev, Alexander Dargomyzhskiy to the authors of the XX century Nikolai Myaskovsky, Vissarion Shebalin, Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Slonimsky. Along with well-known and even textbook ("Lone White Sail ..." by Varlamov "And bored and sad..." by Gurilev), writings, rarely performed at the concert stage (eg, vocal music by XIX century diva Pauline Viardot-Garcia), will be presented. The program also includes fragments of theatrical works: "Demon" opera by Anton Rubinstein, "Masquerade" performance by Vakhtangov Theatre accompanied with music by Aram Khachaturian, "Hero of Our Time" Drama and Comedy Theatre on Taganka with Michael Tariverdiev music.

Michael Segelman: "Of all the Russian poets Lermontov is one of the most complicated for musical incarnation. Immediately after the death of Lermontov, in the middle of the 1840s, composers have seen in his poetry, in particular, depression, loneliness, abandonment. As time went on, style guidelines had been changing, the language of music became more complicated. The second half of the XIX and XX century especially gave us a lot of vocal masterpieces on the verses of the poet. Not only genre, lyrical and dramatic, but the philosophical aspects of Lermontov's poetry became available for the music performing. I have a somewhat utopian idea to create a mini antology "Lermontov in vocal music", in which each author would be represented by only one composition. And in concert on October 23 we will show the world the poet in all the variety that is possible within a single program".

Soloists of the Moscow Novaya Opera Theatre named after E. Kolobov the Honoured Artist of Russia Elvira Khokhlova, Andrzej Bielecki, Anastasia Bibicheva, Alexei Nekludov Valeria Pfister are engaged in the performance. Guest of the evening is the Honoured Artist of Russia, soloist of the Moscow theater "Helikon-Opera" Marina Karpechenko. Piano and comments on the program by Michael Segelman.
