“La Clemenza di Tito” in Tchaikovski concert hall

On the 8th of January the Russian premiere of “La Clemenza di Tito” by “Helikon-Opera” took place in Tchaikovski concert hall. This is the performance from which started the festival of Mozart, organized by Moscow state philarmonic. As is well known, the 250 anniversary since the great composer’s birthday is celebrated in 2006.

“La Clemenza di Tito” was staged by Dmitry Bertman in 2004 for Merida festival (Spain), where it was performed in the genuine ancient Roman amphitheatre in the open air. The zest of the production was the swimming pool, in which the theatre soffits reflected, creating an unforgettable play of light and water.

The swimming pool was also built in Tchaikovsky hall, although the temperature of water was lower than in hot Spain. The audience worried that the singers, walking barefoot, could catch cold. There is no troupe in the world who would survive through such an ordeal. But not the artists of “Helikon-Opera”! The performance went with great success. The house was sold out and the spectators even had to sit on the steps of the amphitheatre of the concert hall.

Honoured artist of Russia Larisa Kostiuk became the real jewel of the performance, singing one of the most difficult parts of Sesto with skill and spirit. With the initiative of the Austrian Embassy and Raiffeisen Bank, the Austrian singer Charlotte Leitner took part in the performance, singing Vitellia. Fans of Nikolay Dorozhkin (Tito) were happy to hear the new soft overtones in his voice.
