La Clemenza di Tito

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Libretto by Pietro Metastasio

Stage Director – Dmitry Bertman
Music Director – Vladimir Ponkin

In 2006 the whole world celebrated 250th anniversary since Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart birth. In Moscow the year opened on the 8th of January on stage of Tchaikovsky Concert Hall with Helikon-Opera's performance "La Clemenza di Tito".

"La Clemenza di Tito" is written by Mozart in the last year of his life, at the same time as "Die Zauberfloete", but it is not very famous in Russia. It is considered, that despite the genial music and splendid vocal parts, opera is not good for the theatre and the plot borrowed from Ancient Rome history is too relative and stilted.

Is it possible for such genius as Mozart  to write a play, which is not effective on stage? Dmitry Bertman's perfomance prove the contrary. Colour figures (both historical and fictional), struggle for power, friendship, love and betrayal. Imperial Rome, having a wickness for shows, conspiracy against Titus, a fire on Capitol - what can be more dramatic? All of these found its incarnation in Helikon-Opera's performance, who was shown for the first time in the authentic ancient theatre of Roman times in Merida (Spain). Tchaikovsky Hall was built in another years but also shaped as a ancient amphitheatre. And if the swimming pool was built in Merida specially for the perfomance of "La Clemenza di Tito", the same was built in Moscow.

Mozart's opera sounded under the conducting of People's Artist of Russia Vladimir Ponkin. The soloists of the theatre The Honoured Artist of Russia Nikolay Dorozhkin (Titus), The Honoured Artist of Russia Larisa Kostiuk (Sextus), a laureate of international contests Elena Semenova (Servilia), Maria Maskhulia (Annius), Mikhail Guzhov (Publius) were ngaged in the performance. The most difficult part of Vittelia was performed by Charlotte Leitner (Austria).
