Svetlana Sozdateleva

Svetlana Sozdateleva has been a principal soloist at Helikon Opera (Moscow) since 1999, where her roles have included: Katerina in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (the production was awarded the Golden Mask award); Liza in The Queen of Spades; Maria in Mazeppa; Lady Macbeth (Verdi); Abigaïlle in Nabucco; Emilia Marty in The Makropoulos Case (cond Gennady Rozhdestvensky); Rusalka (Dvořak); Stefanie in Siberia (Giordano); and Isabella in Das Liebesverbot. Svetlana has appeared worldwide in Helikon Opera productions in Spain, Italy, Austria, the USA, Israel, Korea, China, Lebanon and Denmark.

She sang Katerina in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Radio France Festival in Montpelier in 2000 and at the Ravenna Festival in 2003. She sang Abigaille in Nabucco in Dijon in 2006 and also at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

In 2007-2008 she made her debut as Renata in The Fiery Angel at La Monnaie in Bruxelles (Richard Jones, director; Kazushi Ono, conductor) – a role in which she is now famed throughout the world, in many productions. In the same year, she sang Lady Macbeth (Verdi) at the Glyndebourne Festival (Richard Jones, producer, Vladimir Jurowski, conductor) and then on the UK tour.

In January 2012 she worked with director Dmitry Cherniakhov on a new production of The Invisible City of Kitezh for the Royal Netherlands Opera. In December 2012 Svetlana Sozdateleva appeared in the title role of Tosca for the Latvian National Opera in Riga, with further performances in 2014.

In November 2010 Svetlana Sozdateleva gave her first performance as Sieglinde in Die Walküre with the Russian National Orchestra under Kent Nagano in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow. In June 2011 she sang Abigail in two different productions of Nabucco - at the Chaliapin Festival in Kazan, Russia; and at the Eva Marton Festival in Miskolc, Hungary.

Svetlana Sozdateleva has worked with such conductors as Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Ponkin, Vladimir Jurowsky, Mikhail Pletnev, Henrik Nánási, Evgeny Brazhnik, Oleg Caetani, Theodore Currentzis and Kent Nagano. She has recently appeared as a soloist with the Russian National Orchestra in the 2013 Edinburgh Festival under Mikhail Pletnev; and in Moscow singing Shostakovich's 14th Symphony with the RNO, conducted by Sir Mark Elder.

Current and going engagements include Renata (Fiery Angel) for Komische Oper, Berlin (2014, with revivals in 2015 and 2016); Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in Bologna; the title role in Lady Macbeth in a new production for the Norwegian National Opera (2014, and revival 2016); Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Deutsche Oper, Berlin, Runnciles) and Renata (Fiery Angel) for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (2015). In October 2014 Svetlana Sozdateleva was nominated for the Faust Award (Germany) for her performance in The Fiery Angel at Komische Oper, Berlin.

For the Prokofiev anniversary year in 2016, Svetlana Sozdateleva starred as Renata in three different productions of The Fiery Angel – at the Komische Oper, Berlin; at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf; and at the Bayerisches Staatsoper in Munich.

Forthcoming productions include: Turandot for Helikon Opera, Moscow; Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in Klagenfürt (2018); Love For Three Oranges for Komische Oper, Berlin (2018) ; Die Frau Ohne Schatten, concert performance in Moscow with the Svetlanov Orchestra, cond V Jurowsky; The Fiery Angel in Santiago, Chile; The Fiery Angel (concert perf) in Glasgow; and the title role in The Fiery Angel at the Metropolitan Opera, NYC (2020).
